Big lights will inspire you. Take the Empire State Building. The skyscraper can now wear 16 million colors. Not bad for a building celebrating its 85th birthday this month. Over the past year, it has synced lights with music, sported pinstripes, gone rainbow and sparkled. It shined a red siren for EMS Week, flickered its candlelike antenna for Hanukkah and mimicked a heartbeat for Valentine’s Day.

SAN FRANCISCO — For decades the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge has been considered, when it is considered at all, as a headache for commuters and a place not to be in an earthquake. But that reputation is set to change The public art installation, “The Bay Lights,” will illuminate the bridge’s 1.8-mile western span with 25,000 undulating white lights. The light sculpture, which will be on every night for two years, is privately financed and is estimated to cost some $8 million. Organizers estimate the lights will bring in $97 million to the local economy.
